There are other ways to get your name in print other than writing a book. Here are four to try.

Here are 12 ways to market your book or consulting practice. I will be covering this at my Marketing With A Book Summit this May 15-16, 2011 in Minnesota.

  1. Columnist for a publication (status based on circulation). Long shot and then sure thing as each column you write is published.
  2. Magazine or newspaper article. Long shot. I can give you advice on how to pitch and lists of publications. This is a targeted strategy, not a shot gun approach. What top five publications would you think it best to appear in?
  3. Magazine or newspaper opinion piece. Long shot. There are media lists for you that will list appropriate media contact names, addresses (to send some sample books), phone numbers and emails.  Buying lists like this can cost you hundreds of dollars.
  4. Trade journal opinion piece. Long shot. Again, target the industries you want and buy a list.
  5. Send out a news release announcing the book for sale. I will help you draft and I have found a source that will send it out over PR Newswire for you at a more than 50% savings (instead of $625 for a national distribution to 10,000 news outlets the cost will be $299). See Dan Janal, PR Leads.
  6. Articles on the Internet on various Web sites and blogs. Sure thing. I have a list of more than 50 websites to give you that you can submit to that I will publish soon.
  7. Publish your own blog. Sure thing. Use WordPress or Blogger. I have other blogs my authors are using. Go to www.prodigalexecutive.blogspot.com for an example of free blog.
  8. Publish your own ezine. Sure thing. Use program like ConstantContact. There is a formula that is working that I would like to show you. Tied to this strategy is making an offer of free teleseminars about the book using a free bridgeline and a low cost service that will record the teleseminars for website posting or other marketing uses. Do you have a database built up already?
  9. Review books on online book sale sites. Sure thing. Like Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com. Be sure to tie back to your book.
  10. Create an information product for sale. Sure thing. Like special report pdf or audio CD. If you use it when you speak I recommend $20 for an audio CD (cost you about $2.50 to produce).
  11.  Publish articles on your own Web site. Sure thing. How is the Web site copy coming along? You should repurpose the book content into articles to appear on the Web site.
  12. Give testimonials to others. Sure thing. Linked In is great place to start. This is part of a Linked In strategy where you grow your names. I don’t recommend investing too much time in Facebook or Twitter, but you want to have a Facebook fan page (this is free to set up, but needs upkeep)
